SAI Global Video Style Guide

Updated: Jul 28

Situation: SAI Global, was experiencing inconsistency across its internal training videos. Each department (Corporate Communications, Sales and Marketing, Customer Experience, Learning and Development) was producing content with different styles, which led to confusion and a lack of brand cohesiveness. Corporate Communications identified the need for a unified video style guide to standardize the visual and auditory elements of all company-produced videos. Due to our collaborative efforts with our Corporate Communications partners, I was assigned to work on this project.

Task: As the lead instructional designer, I was tasked with developing a comprehensive video style guide. The objective was to create a document that outlined the standards for video production, ensuring all video types were visually consistent, engaging, and aligned with SAI Global's brand identity.

Action:

To create the video style guide, I undertook the following steps:

  1. Research and Analysis:

    1. Conducted a needs assessment by interviewing key stakeholders from various departments to understand their video production processes and requirements.

    2. Reviewed existing training videos to identify common issues and best practices.

  2. Development of Guidelines:

    1. Defined key elements such as color schemes, typography, logo usage, and graphic styles to ensure brand consistency.

    2. Established video production standards, including resolution, aspect ratio, and frame rates.

    3. Created guidelines for audio elements, including voice-over standards, background music selection, and audio quality.

  3. Template Creation:

    1. Developed video templates using Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Camtasia, providing pre-set layouts for intros, outros, lower thirds, and transitions.

    2. Designed a sample video to demonstrate the application of the style guide in a real-world scenario.

  4. Documentation and Training:

    1. Compiled all guidelines into a comprehensive document using Adobe InDesign, including visual examples and step-by-step instructions.

    2. Conducted training sessions for the video production teams to familiarize them with the new style guide and ensure proper implementation.

Result: The implementation of the video style guide led to a significant improvement in the quality and consistency of SAI Global's company-wide videos.

Key outcomes included:

  • Increased Brand Cohesion:

    • All videos now adhered to a unified style, reinforcing SAI Global's brand identity across all departments.

  • Enhanced Engagement:

    • The standardized visual and auditory elements made the videos more engaging and easier to follow, resulting in higher employee satisfaction and retention of information.

  • Improved Efficiency:

    • The production teams reported a reduction in video creation time due to the availability of templates and clear guidelines, allowing them to focus more on content quality rather than design.

  • Positive Feedback:

    • Stakeholders and employees provided positive feedback regarding the new style guide for its clarity and professional appearance. The executive team acknowledged the project as a key factor in enhancing internal communications and training effectiveness.
